I have had the chance to sample some grilling season product from our national food chains this week past, and I couldn't be happier. The President's Choice line of product are already very popular in Canada and for good reason, they are generally quite good. I already use some of their marinades and grilling sauces, even though I do make my own too. It is good to have a couple of pre-made ones on hand for those days when you have a lot on your plate.. so to speak.
I like the trend that the PC products are turning to, sourcing more Canadian products and expanding in the greener areas of food production. It's a good start, and I think it will only get better. And besides, Galen is adorable on those commercials. I just want to take him home and feed him.
We did get to sample some of the meats for grilling season as well, and here is what they had to say about them:
PC® Tender and Tasty™ beef is cut from Canada AAA or USDA Choice grade beef, restaurant quality beef superior to previous Canada AA offerings. PC® Free From™ beef, chicken and pork products are specially selected and raised without the use of antibiotics. Loblaw is also increasing the amount of meat it is sourcing from Canadian producers.
So, how did everything taste?
The first night we did the steak in the Steak Spice Marinade. See that beautiful steak? I definitely had the feeling that it was of better quality than we were used to. The marinade was quite good, it had classic steak flavourings, perfect for a mixed crowd.
On the second evening we did the ribs and chicken in the Memories of Dad's Grill Maple, Apple & Beer Sauce. The chicken and ribs were of excellent quality, but I found the sauce to be far too mild for my taste. This is just the luck of the draw as far as their sauces go, I quite like many of their others that I have already tried.
Some lucky Canadians will be receiving free coupons to try the new PC products.
The PC giveaway:
To further promote their new products and revitalized in-store experience, President's Choice® street teams will be distributing free-exchange coupons to commuters throughout Canada on Wednesday, May 13th.
Butcher-attired team members will be stationed at the busiest commuter transit hubs in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax and Calgary from 4-6:00 PM Wednesday evening. They will move from one high-traffic location to another until all the coupons are distributed (max value $10/coupon).
And, since you all were so happy with the last cocktail that I made, today I have a strawberry daiquiri for you. Now, don't worry that I might have consumed this one already.. there's lots more fruit and rum here.
The New American Bartenders Guide
1.5 oz light rum
0.5 oz lime juice
1 tsp simple syrup or to taste
6 large frozen strawberries
Mix with cracked ice in a blender until smooth and pour into a chilled glass. Garnish all girly style. Makes one girly drink, multiply as needed.
Of course, these girly drinks go down easy and are mighty addictive. There is always the chance of becoming addicted.
Here's a young Dave Foley, in a Kids in the Hall sketch emphasizing the dangers of becoming a girly drink drunk.
Don't let this happen to you!
