Armchair Book Review - Shift

Shift: A Novel
by Tim Kring
and Dale Peck
Hardcover, 368 pages

This is certainly one of the strangest books I have read in a while. I was initially attracted to it as Tim Kring is the creator of the t.v. show Heroes (my son's favourite) and Crossing Jordan (a favourite of mine). Shift takes place in the days leading up to the assassination of President Kennedy and leads the reader through a gritty, blood-soaked, wild ride of LSD, CIA, FBI, mind-control, mafia, KGB, and astral projection. Somehow they pull it off, and the book is hard to put down until you finish - but the ride is less than comfortable.
This what-if tale is studded with a host of characters both fantasy and historical - Lee Harvey Oswald, Timothy Leary, J. Edgar Hoover, and Jack Ruby are all woven into the book to create a supernatural conspiracy-theory that has just enough basis in reality to make you question what you know.
Definitely not for the faint of heart.
